Vineyards in Talbot in 1896Published in the "Talbot Leader", July 1896 "Signor Bragaro, the Viticultural expert to the Department of Agriculture, was invited by the Talbot Borough Council to visit Talbot on Wednesday last and give instruction in pruning vines, and other information relating to it, in Mr. S. Dunn's vineyard and also in Mr. Cayzer's adjacent vineyard. Considerable interest was shown by the public, some visitors coming from Avoca and Wareek. Mr. Bragato answered many questions put to him by interested parties, and he distributed illustrated pamphlets on grafting vines, and he announced that he would forward more pamphlets to Mr. Blake (Mayor) for distribution. Samples of wine were submitted to Mr. Bragato, and he expressed the opinion that the district was eminently suited to producing a high class wine. The Mayor thanked Mr. Dunn and Mr. Cayzer for placing their vineyards at the disposal of the public, and Mr. Bragato for his courteous and able instruction, which he was sure would be of great value to those people interested in the wine industry. In reply Mr. Bragato said he was pleased to have again visited Talbot district and he was of the opinion that an important industry could be developed here if properly fostered. He referred to the Zanti currants planted by Mr. Blake, and he was well pleased with the progress they have made and he felt sure they would prove profitable, and it was evident that the Borough Council was wide enough awake to secure the services of the experts attached to the Department of Agriculture, as the information they got was invaluable to all sections of the primary production industry." -------------------------------------------------------------- Thanks to Bea Brewster for providing this information from the Talbot archives. |
